What is Acne?
Acne or Acne vulgaris is a medical term normally we call it as pimples. Acne is a skin condition that is commonly seen is teenagers but it can affect people of all ages.
What are the causes of acne?
The acne could be caused by the following factors
- Excess sebum secretion- There are sebaceous glands which secrete sebum, normally when this becomes excess there are pimple breakouts.
- Stress can be an aggravating factor.
- Use of cosmetics constantly might lead to comedones.
- There can be genetic acne.
- Acne due to underlying hormonal issues like PCOD/PCOS.
What are the symptoms of acne?
There is a standard grading system to know the symptoms of acne. According to WHO, the symptoms are classified into four grades
In grade 1, there are tiny comedones (black/whiteheads).
Grade 2 – Papules and few pustules.
Grade 3 – Many pustules, cysts, nodules.
Grade 4 – Scaring would be there.
What are the risk factors for acne?
Risk factor for acne includes
- Age
- Hormonal Changes
- Family history
It is of utmost important to treat acne at the earliest. Early the treatment better is the prognosis. Aim of the treatment is to prevent pigmentation and scars on the face. Underlying hormonal issues and stress should be addressed to present from the severity of scarring.
What are the treatment plans for acne?
Treatments of acne depend on what grade of acne you have
Grade 1 – Comedolytics are given.
Grade 2 and 3 – Topical and oral antibiotics are mostly recommended.
Grade 4 – Treated by the help of lasers and surgery.
Low glycemic diet is advised to the people who are experiencing the symptoms of acne.
